dual boot problem - need help

By nickstebbs ·
I am trying to dual boot my computer with windows xp and 95. windows xp was preloaded and I don't have the disc, but I have the windows 95 disc. I am using partion magic and bootmagic, i have created a 2GB FAT logical partition for windows 95 to be installed on, and when i boot i can go onto that partition using boot magic and use an ms-dos boot disc to get into dos.

my problem is, dos doesn't recognise my cd-rom drive and gives an "invalid drive specification" error. this means i can't runsetup on the windows 95 cd and i can't install it. I have looked around and found that I need to load the drivers for my toshiba sd-r1102 cd-rom drive and a file called mscdex.exe . I have downloaded the driver and installed it. i used a mscdex.exe file that i got off the windows 95 cd and then when that failed i downloaded a more recent one. it still doesn't work and i'm out of ideas.

If anyone could help it would be much appreciated. Thanks

I believe that the program on the Windows 95 diskette looks for the installation CD to be defined as D-Drive. Since you've partitioned your hard drive, presumably as C-Drive and D-drive, the CD-Rom may now be E-Drive (or F-Drive, etc., depending on whatever else is installed and how it's connected.)

I believe the initial setup program on the diskette is a simple .bat file which you could edit to seek the correct CD-Rom location. Be advised, however, that this will have to be changed in several locations throughout the setup program.

(I've seen this work successfully with multiple drives, and I've also seen it not work.)

Win98 had 3 options when booting from the startup disk.

Start win98 setup from cd
Start DOS with CD drivers
Start DOS without CD drivers

I'm not sure if the win95 startup disk has these options. If it does, then choose Start DOS with CD drivers. Once loaded you should be at a DOS prompt on your floppy drive. Change to your CD drive and type "Setup" (no quotes).

If these options are not available from the win95 boot disk then go to www.bootdisk.com and download a bootdisk setup for win98. Follow the instructions for creating the bootdisk and use that. Then follow the instructions above for starting your setup program.
