Dual boot Win2000 Server and Win2000 Pro

By eadeloye ·
Is it possible to dual boot Windows 2000 Server with Windows 2000 Professional on a PC having two large hard disks installed? If possible, could some please enlighten me. Thanks for the good work.

Dual boot Win2000 Server and Win2000 Pro

Sure, anything is possible. I would suggest you load each on a seperate hard disk. First install 2000 Pro on C:

Print the file c:\boot.ini -- it is hidden and will look something like below. That is so if the second install Windows 2000 Server onthe 2nd hard drive overrights boot.ini, (it did not for me but just to be sure), then you can edit the file to make it work.

You actually only need to have seperate partitions. You will notice in the enclosed boot.ini file that it specifies where to find the operating system via, disk and parition.

SAMPLE BOOT.INI File:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Pro" /fastdetect

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Server disk 2" /fastdetect

First install windows 2000 pro on the first hdd.
after the install shut down. Reboot the system with the windows 2000 server cd, Select clean install and install the server edition on the second drive. I have three systems that are configured thisway for training purposes. It works very well.
