dual boot XP & 98

By radpeer ·
I'd like to dual boot XP & 98. I'ts easy to do by installing W98 first and then XP, but a training machine already has XP installed and I wish to install 98 installed as it seems to be more in demand at this point. I had a nightmare when I once installed 2000 after XP as XP got killed and I didn't know what else to do so I reinstalled XP. I would rather not go through that again and I know the above can be done.
Any advice please?

The easiest way to go about this, is to load W98 onto a new hard drive.
Have the hard drive as a slave in the PC that you load W98 on so that the drive letter is the same as it will be when you install the drive in the XP system.

After W98 is installed, limit the drivers it installs so that you don't have problems when you install it in the target system.
Copy the files from the root folder of the boot drive to the root folder of the W98 drive.

Install the drive as a slave in the XP system.
Edit boot.ini so that you have the option of booting to either W98, or XP.

See www.systeminternals.com for a list of the boot.ini commands.

If the XP drive is formatted as a NTSF volume, this is the ONLY way to install W98 without having to re-install XP.
Also, W98 will NOT be able to access ANY files on the NTSF drives.

Thank's for the advice - it's a simple way. I'm not prepared to put another hard drive in that machine though. I'm going to partition it and convert the second partition to FAT32 and put 98 on that one. The boot.ini should be fine but there are som other files that I'm not how to identify or how to change them. I read about it being done but don't have the article any more.

There are 3rd party software programs that will allow you to install multiple O/S's [though from what I've seen in this forum, users tend to have problems with them]. System Commander is one program which writes it's own MBR and runs first before any O/S, thus allowing you to choose which O/S to run. There are others [I know TheChas, Maxwell, Klippert, and others here know of different 3rd party programs you can use.

If you care to, glance over the questions posted in this forum and you'll find that there have been numerous questions asked about dual booting with XP and W9X/W2K. Some have really creative methods.
