dual booting hard drives

by TheChas In reply to dual booting hard drives

As far as hardware goes, I ALWAYS recommend that both drives on the same IDE channel (cable) be from the same manufacture.

For software, XP will handle this all by itself.

Start by partitioning the Primary master drive using a W98 startup disk.

(I recommend that between the 2 physical hard drives, that you set up at least 1 extended partition with at least 1 logical drive. If you format this drive as a FAT32 volume, you can use it as a common 'data' drive between the 3 operating systems.)
(There is a good article on partitioning strategy posted at www.aumha.org )
(For information on fdisk, check out the links at www.fdisk.com/fdisk )

Set up at least the Primary DOS partition, and format it.

Install Windows 98 onto the C: drive.

Load the Windows XP CD. Follow the prompts for a 'custom' installation, and install XP as a dual boot system onto the drive.
(Primary DOS partition of the slave drive.)

NOTE: If you want to be able to access the files on the XP partition from W98, you need to format the drive as a FAT32 volume.
If you wish to hide the files on the XP drive from Windows 98, format the drive as a NTSF volume.

Now when you boot, you will see a screen asking you which session you wish to boot to.
If no answers are given, the default will be XP.
If you wish to make W98 the default, or change the time before it automatically boots, you need to edit the boot.ini file.
A good resource for the commands in the boot.ini file is posted at www.systeminternals.com

One side note:
Install ALL application software separately for each installation of Windows.

Another option would be to enter the BIOs when you want to use the OS on Drive D and select to boot from D in the Boot Sequence. Kind of a pain but its an option.
