    Dual-Channel DDR SDRAM RAM

    by jordanspcrepair ·

i was curious about dual channel memory architecture. i have 2 PC2100 266Mhz DDR-SDRAM memory modules. 1 is a samsung 128MB PC2100 266Mhz DDR-SDRAM memory module and the other memory module is a Kbyte 256MB PC2100/PC2700 266Mhz/333Mhz DDR-SDRAM memory module, will work with dual channel architecture?? i am kinda confused. i went on hardwardsecrets.com and the website said that i could use 2 sticks of PC333 memory modules that isn’t the same MB value in dual channel architecture. will it be the same case with the PC266??

The way I understand it, you can mix speeds (Which you are), as long as you realize they will run at the lowest common speed (266 – PC2100). You cannot however, run in dual channel mode with different SIZED modules. Your system can still run with those two sticks, it just won’t run in Dual channel mode. Do yourself a favor, get yourself a “MATCHED” dual channel RAM kit. It has been said that even identical RAM from the same manufacturer, with the same specs, and even same lot/bin numbers are not guaranteed to run in dual channel mode. It’s best to buy dual channel memory as a KIT, and let the manufacturer worry about incompatibilities, also note that 99% of all memory sold in the USA come with a LIFETIME warranty.

DDR and dual channel DDR (DDR2) are as different as SDRAM and DDR RAM are.

You cannot use DDR2 RAM in a motherboard designed for DDR RAM and vice-versa.

For desktop PCs, DDR RAM comes in 184 pin DIMMs.

DDR2 comes in 240 pin modules.

Thus, the sockets are different and not compatible.

When used in Dual Channel mode, a 4GB DDR2 module functions as 2GB of system RAM.

allways buy memory modules in a KIT if you want to use them in dual channel mode. BTW speed improvement isn’t that great…

Yes 266 FSB DC RAM set support Dual Channel, but is unsure whther two different RAM module will support the Dual Channnel, better go for purchasing a paired RAM from reputed Brand like Crossair read article http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/reviews/memory/Corsair_TwinX_3200LL_1.html
