Hi,

Tricky... Normally the installation takes care of everything correctly with respect to setting up the multi boot.

Does your boot.ini look correct? There should be two separate entries that look like a bit like this...

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)

Yours will have different consecutive numbers (1 & 2 I think) in the partition field for each - if you've installed on the same disk in two partitions (and only have two partitions on the disk)

You'll find boot.ini as a hiddenfile in c

Cheers,
Tim.

hi tim

this what i found in my boot.ini

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

Later i added:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows"

in the end but still it doesnot work please advise

Tim is correct, you likely have an error in the boot.ini file.

For inforamtion on editing the boot.ini file check out the dual boot section at www.systeminternals.com

You can also search Microsoft's web site for the terms boot.ini and bootcfg to get a list of the boot.ini commands and the proper syntax.

Hi,

Yep, your boot.ini looks pretty right. I'm not sure whether you're still having this problem but if you are, then the other thing I can think of is that you inadvertantly converted the filesystem to NTFS when you installed WinXP

Win98 cantread that and so wouldn't boot. This is wierd, though. I had a feeling you weren't allowed to convert the system partition like that...

Anyway... check what format you c drive is... if its NTFS, then let us know.

Cheers,
Tim.

Hi,

Well, beyond the suggestions I've made, I'm not too sure where to go next with this problem. You could try re-installing WinME but you're running the risk of losing the ability to boot to XP if you do.

If it were me, at this point I'd probably be wiping the drive and starting again with the two installations.

Backup anything you want to keep.
Boot with the XP CD to format and partition your drive into at least two partitions.
Stop the installation once formatting has been completed. You're just using the XP CD to do the format and partitioning....
Then install WinME into one partition. Update all drivers etc. Make sure it works.
Finally install WinXP into the other partition. Again update the drivers etc.

Here's a link to a site that will help you configuring for dual boot.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/administration/management/mltiboot.asp

(remove spaces from the above URL)

Of course if its not really important to you to have ME, then dont bother. I have dual boot 98SE and XP and I rarely use the 98SE boot.

Cheers,
Tim.
