Second Partition or Hard Drive

As long as you did not partition the disk to give Windows all of it. You will need unpartitioned disk space to install another operating system to. You could also install Ubuntu on a second hard drive.

When you install Ubuntu, it should configure GRUB (the bootloader) so that you can boot Windows or Ubuntu whenever you start the computer. It is best to install Linux AFTER windows because windows will re-write the boot record to only boot windows.
