Dumb down 64bit os to winXP Pro

By lnn5432 ·
I have 10 HP computers in a school setting that just came in with AMD Athlon and Windows xp 64 bit operating systems. These computers will not accept our Antivirus, Corporate NAV V10 and other software the teachers use. I am to "dumb down" these computers with Windows XP & told to just use the Product Key on the side of the computer that came with...this will not work. Does anyone have any suggestion short of buying 10 Win XP Pro operating system & tossing the 64 bit version? Thanks for any help in advance. Linda

Linda,

I have not read the XP 64 bit EULA in detail.

However, "typically" you can roll back to an older version of Windows under the terms of the license agreement.

I suggest that you verify this with HP, or the Microsoft area rep.

To use the existing XP-64 product keys is another story.

What you will need to do, is install XP Pro with an existing install CD using that specific key to install the OS.

Then, before activating the systems, change the product key to the key for the 64 bit version.

Check out this article:

You may end up needing to cal the activation line to get these systems activated with the X64 product key.

Chas

I believe the problem is with your Symantec AV rather than the 64 bit XP. The 64 bit XP is "supposed" to be downward compatible with 32 bit application. That's always been Microsoft's policy.

here is Symantec's scoop on AMD 64 bit processors.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2005040710394748?Open&src=ent&docid=2004062908154748&nsf=ent-security.nsf&view=4c7874c886a9bb0c88256fc700654267&dtype=corp&prod=Symantec%20AntiVirus%20Corporate%20Edition&ver=10.0&osv=&osv_lvl=&seg=

note: your Symantec CD has the 64 bit version of client AV however, note again, all the server administration and AV are not compatible with 64 bit processors or O/S. If only the workstations are 64 bit, install the 64 bit client AV version.
