DUN Don't!

By bill ·
On a win 98 SE PC, the Dialup Networking dials, negotiates and connects to my ISP. Using WINIPCFG I can see that an IP address was assigned. It all looks OK until I launch any application that uses TCP/IP. These apps crash immediatly. Ping, Tracert and browsers all crash. I took out DUN and reinstalled it. I used system file checker to look for corrupt files. All were OK. At one time, Shiva had been installed to access a corporate LAN and this problem seems to have cropped up after deleting Shiva. Any ideas?

First off, before installing new applications, one should always back up the registry.

As for your current delima, I suggest you download a copy of Regclean. A description and download link can be found at this site;

If this does not work, I would then try doing a search of the registry for all references to Shiva and delete them. Remember to backup the registry before doing this.

Good Luck

Have you tried removing TCP/IP from the protocol stack and reinstalling it? Just something to try.

Go to networks in control panel and remove all Network items. Client, dialup adapter and tcp/ip. Reboot computer then reinstall each item. When you removed the previous connection it probably uninstalled some shared files.
