duplicate entries in device manager

By RG11 ·
I have an older compaq presario 500mhz machine with win98. I initially was haveing trouble with my modem but when I went to the device manager I have two entries listed for multiple things. For example to name a few system clock , my comm1 and ltp , standard floppy is listed twice, plus many more. I have the yellow exclamation marks by each duplicate entry. I delete the bad one and windows reinstalls it when I restart. I delete both of them and windows installs 2 back. not sure what to do besides reloading windows(last resort)

I would first try booting into safe mode and deleting the items there. Then restart and see if it works correctly.

If not, you can delete the "PCI BUS" entry under system devices in device manager and restart. It will then re-autodetect each item and may well resolve the issue.

Good Luck!

when in safe mode not all devices are showing. I deleted one and when I restarted windows installed the duplicate with the exclamation mark.

Hello, try replacing the bios battery first, this may not be what causes your problem but it worked for us twice, with duplicate indications of hardware.

This may occur when Operating System has been reinstalled over the previous installation

To clear the duplicate entries, boot the computer into Safe Mode and then proceed to delete the duplicate entry, make sure you donot delete the entry that is working
