If you are searching for duplicate files and pull up dll's or other duplicates, you should not remove them from c:\windows, c:\windows\system, etc. or any iteration of c:\windows

Cleanup is not performed on these files unless the user does that cleanup.

What files to delete depend on a lot of factors.
As anna said, you do not want to delete DLLs from the windows folders.

You may have problems if you delete duplicate DLLs from application folders. Some programs were written to use a specific version of a DLL. Sometimes, a newer version causes the program to malfunction. When a software mfg comes across this conflict, they often choose the cheap quick route, and revise the install routine to place a copy of the specific rev DLL in the program folder.

So, as a rule, I don't deleate any "system" type files no mater where they are stored. (Except in the Windows\Temp folder)

So, keep most everything in the Windows folders, and use extreme caution when deleteing any other system type files.

if you are using win 98se and scandisk for cleanup, in advanced set the perameters that you are looking for. unless you are sure you know what you are working with i do not recommend removing any "duplicate" files.
