"duplicate name exits on the network" ?

By jszada ·
Running w2k server,I have two sites with one IP address. Both web sites work fine. I have tried to set up two ftp sites with each domain name, one public and one private. No problem with one, but with the second, when I attempt to setup second ftp site, I keep getting a message which says "duplicate name exits on the network". I have set up both identically. What might be causing this?

"duplicate name exits on the network" ?

The first site you setup is using port 21 and the IP address on the server, the only way to setup another FTP site is to change the port number to something different, 20 would work. Port 20 is ftp-data but usually not used. In other words, you can have two web sites using the same IP because of IIS Host Headers, but FTP is bound to individual ports per IP Address. So, setup the second IP using port 20 and you should be good to go. Good Luck.

I already have the two ftp sites set to different port numbers. I did that for the first site, using the different host headers, and it worked fine. When I tried to do the same thing for a second web site (different domain names) on the same computer, it didn't work. Still have the problem.

After studying your answer and working with the IIS console, I now understand what it is that you were saying. I see now that you were right. I appreciate your teaching me a great deal that I didn't know. Thanks for the help and the info.
