Duplicate name

When signing on, I get a message that a duplicate name already exists. There are two users. This is at the screen where one selects which user, but before the selection takes place.

What do I need to do to remove the duplicate? Windows XP. Thanks.

The duplicate name message is referring to the computer name not the user name. In order for communication to occur over a network each computer name must be unique. If two computers have the same name the second computer to boot will receive the message you see.

To change the computer name go to the Control Panel, start the System applet, click on the Computer Name tab, click on the Change button, and then type in a new Compter Name.

Could this be referring to having a second conputer with the same name added to the network (however, although networking is now off, I'm still getting the message...I'll write down the specific message and put it in this question)???

The exact message is:

"Windows - System error

A duplicate name exists on the network."

Assuming that the "duplicate name" refers to another desktop's name and that both the desktops are part of a domain, you have to first remove both the desktops from the domain, ie. put them part of WORKGROUP. Then rename the desktops, make sure the names are unique, and add them back to the domain.
