It seems like your cd-rw has gone bad... Unplug the data cable going into the cd-rw and test your system... Does the other one work fine now?

It is common with time for cd-rw's to go out after time. Cheaper, faster ones can be purchased through

One thing to try also would be to replace the data cable, however, seeing as the cd-rw does not open when the button is pushed would let you know - bad drive.

Good luck.

open box and see if they are both cabled to the same controller. if so, suspect controller. or bad cable. reseat connector at motherboard. try new cable if that doesn't fix it. and then try replacing with 3rd part ide controller card (cheap) like Promise ide controller. maybe you can move stuff around, get cd and/or dvd drive on another controller to prove it will stay working good virus protection?

after checking the cables, check your power supply also.
