    DVD and OS problem.

My friend has a Compaq. I have a Windows Vista DVD disk, I put in the dvd inside the dvd drive and reboot the computer. It doesn’t show the first time so we reboot it again and it shows the message:” Load Setup from CD or DVD…” we press space and it loads at the same message and just stays there. We reboot do it again, same thing, reboot then it even just doesn’t say any thing about the setup and loads to Windows XP. Windows does a disk check and just freeze on the middle. We reboot again and when the windows loads saying Windows XP, we wait a little bit and it just reboots it self. What could be the problem with the OS and the DVD drive?
PS. I checked every connection inside the computer, everything is ok.

After you tried loading Vista is where your problem began. You can not boot to XP now? Did you check the computer to see if Vista would work on it? It may have tried to load and when the system did not meet it’s standards it stopped. It could have done some thing to the boot.ini or one of the other loaders for XP. Try booting from the XP cd and do a repair.
Another thought did you back up all your files before you tried this?
When upgrading or even trying out new software clean, defrag and run scan disk.

There are currently quite a lot of DVD Drives that will not read a DVD as a CD when you boot from them. In some cases it requires a BIOS Flash to change the BIOS to allow it to read a DVD instead of a CD to boot from and in other cases it required Flashing the Firmware of the DVD Drive if that is an option to get it to read both DVD & CD to boot from & sometimes you just have to replace the DVD Drive all together.

What you need to do here is try a Boot CD something like the Ultimate Boot CD and see if the computer will boot off that and if it does you know that you have a problem with the BIOS being unable to read a DVD Media at the first Boot Option.
