1. Try diferent media.

2. Try to burn at a lower speed.

3. Try the newest version of Nero

4. Check to see if an firmware update is avaible for you writer.

Thanks ghimpe I wish to try what you suggested to update the firmware, but if I have updated and it still remain the same, should I remove the update how do you remove or uninstalled the update. I tried several brand cdr's it still failed I have the latestest version installed. I could watch dvd movie in the dvd burner drive, some cdr recorded earlier could not being detected.

The unit uses two different lasers, one for DVDs and one for CDRs. It sounds like the CDR laser is malfunctioning. You could try a CDR lens cleaner but i doubt it will help you.

Did you had this problem before you update the firmware??

The best solution is to replace the drive, new DVD Double Layer Writers prices start at about 50$.

I have no problem with this burner earlier it happen only when I installed a new hdd (80GB)as secondary master (I will used it as spare,I just change my hdd by just sloting the hdd into the drawer tray,I do not know what you call this). One thing is that I could view dvd movies with it and some data CDR.In the Primarary hdd the same problem happened. My point is that is there a risk in updating the firmware in this present situation.Thanks.

Some optical drives do not like to be paired with other optical drives (although this causes the drives not to be recognized).

In case you have IDE hard drives, this is how you should have them connected:

Primary Master: hard drive with OS
Primary Slave: CD-ROm
Secondary Master: CD-Writer
Secondary Slave: the other hard drive

Use only Master/Slave setings on the drives, do not use Cable Select.

Configure like above and post back with results.

Oh, ok, i'll try to explain:

Your mobo has 2 IDE connectors. 2 IDE cables plugs in this conectors. The IDE cable has 3 connectors: one plugs in the mother board and the other 2 connects to IDE drives (hdd, cd-rom, etc).

One of those 2 connectors on the mobo will be Primary, and the other one is the Secondary.

On the IDE devices (hdd and cd-roms) there is a label with a diagram of the configuration of Master/Slave jumpers. The jumpers are placed on the back of the drive, on the side where you plug the cables in.

You will have to remove the drives from the case and carefuly set them (by using the jumpers) like this:

On the Primary IDE channel (on the cable that connects to the Prymary connector on the mobo) connect your OS hard drive and set it as Master.
On the other plug (of the same cable) connect your CD-Rom set as Slave.

On the secondary IDE channel connect you Writer set as Master and your other harddrive set as Slave.

Do not change the boot order in BIOS, that just sets the order in which your computer looks for an OS on different devices. While in BIOS be sure that you set all the IDE devices as Auto Detect (some mother boards do this by default)

GooD LucK, and post back if you have other questions.

" I was messing around and tried what was burn to the cdr after it failed and to my supprise the cdr could be read by the CDROM but not by the dvd burner."

Sounds like the CD - lense is malfuncioning. Your only option now is to buy a new writer.
Sorry for the bad news

Hi ghimpe I finally set it right with your instructions given although I have to reset the "enable cd recording on this drive" in CD/DVD drive properties tab in 'my computer' when I wish to burn CD. Is there a way to standardise it so I can use the selected drive to burn CD or DVD. I am having one CD writer (have removed cdrom as replacement) and DVD writer fixed at present. I wish to thanks again for all your help and satisfied with all you have given and do hope lastly you can let me know by PM. or sendemail to wakim@streamyx.com.

Thanks again for your quick respond I am a average IT user and not very clear of what you mean by the setting of the hard drives. At present my Pri.master is ME. OS and the secondary is win xp pro as slave. In the BIOS the 1st. boot is HDD- 0 (me), 2nd. HDD- 1(xp) and 3rd.- cdrom. the rest is set to auto. I am not sure this is what you mean and hope to have a clearer explanation on it.Thanks again and hope you will reply.
