DVD, CD-RW Installation

By groehmer ·
Do I best install a cd-rw and dvd on the same or on separate controllers. Do I share a hard disk drive with either?

Any responses are very much appreciated.

Thank you.

It doen't matter how you connect the drives to which controller, making sure you set the jumper settings properly
You may want to connect the cd-rw to the hard drive as slave
Connect the dvd to the secondary controller as the master

Hi,

Yep... It shouldn't make any difference... but as an alternative suggestion to soulriders proposed configuration, I would but the HardDrive on its own controller and the DVD and CD-RW on the other.

The reason being that you'll get slightlybetter throughput when copying to and from CDs. Invariably you copy to or from the hard disk so its best if they're on separate controllers.

Also you're less likely to be using the CD-RW at the same time as your DVD so they wont interfere with each other as much.

A relatively minor performance point, but a boost in performance you'll get for "free".

Cheers,
Tim.

There was some discussion on this subject a while back in Techrepublic.

If you have the DVD and CD-RW on the same controller there were some problems noted when copying CD to CD.

So I'd recommend one of the following:
1) CD-RW as master when another CD player was on the same controller.
2) Put the drives on different controllers.
3) Copy to hard drive before writing to the CD-RW (It's an option on some CD burning programs).

It's a pain when the hard drive bays are a long way from the CD bays unless you've got the parts to do custom cabling.

I have my hard drives on the primary controller, and a DVD and CD-RW on my secondary controller. The DVD is Master and the CD-RW is Slave. It's been over a year of fairly extensive use and I have not had a single problem.
I wish I could say that about the MicroSoft Optical Explorer Mouse I installed.
