DVD DRIVE

By peter ·
Hi everyone,

I want to buy a DVD drive, mainly to play dvd movies, I have a Celeron 600 with 128mb ram, do I need a decoder card or will a 12 speed DVD play movies without a decoder?

Thanks in advance.

Peter.

Yes and no. You can buy a software decoder which relies on using your CPU to carry out all of the decoding which puts a bit of a strain on your system and may make the movies stutter a little during fast motion sequences. Alternatively you can like you say buy a hardware decoder which fits into a PCI slot on your motherboard and removes the need for your CPU to do all of the necessary decoding. As you have a Celeron 600, I would recommend the latter option as I tried using WinDVD2000 (the best s/ware decoder "allegedly") on my Athlon 700 with 320Meg of RAM and the likes of Mission Impossible 2 and Ali-G Aiii! suffered quite a bit. I can personally recommend buying the Hollywood Magic 2 decoder. It supports all versions of Windows and costs about ?50 from www.infiniti..co.uk.

Hope this has helped you.
