dvd drive is not recognising disks correctly when inserted.

By agnidev108 ·
Hi there,
When I insert disks into dvd drive I do not get usual windows prompt asking what I would like to do etc. In windows explorer I can see the drive & disk but all the files & folders display as being not recognised with a windows interet explorer 'e'. The only way I get windows to recognise the files is by copying them to hard disk. I have updated drivers & troubleshoot but come up with no errors. System is running XP home. Can anyone please help?

Internet Explorer is not the file manager.

Don't use the 'e'. Use Windows Explorer, accessible from My Computer, among other methods.

Could you explain what you mean buy the files not being recognized, if the above does not help? (Full text of error messages, if any.)

Right click on the DVD drive in Windows Explorer, click Properties. Click the AutoPlay tab. You can use the drop down list to select content types, and define actions for each type below. I suggest choosing "Prompt me each time" at the very bottom, as automatically running everything is a good way to catch a virus from USB flash drives.
Click OK when done.

I am using windows explorer to view what is on the d drive. The names of the files & folders are shown but the icons for all the files & folders are showing internet explorer icons, which is very strange... like it's reading them as web pages (maybe).

The "prompt me each time" is selected & still does not prompt when disc is inserted. Unsure what other steps to take. Have also re-installed the drive hoping to correct some setting etc but no luck.

If you can be of any further help it will be much appreciated.
