    DVD Drive not working

    Locked

    by jqoolio ·

I am running Windows XP and my DVD drive stopped working after I burned a DVD a few weeks ago. It can read CDs (haven’t tried burning CDs), but it doesn’t read or burn DVDs. I am using Nero and I tried updating to a new version but to no avail. Here is the Nero log below:

I googled the drive model everywhere and it’s hard to find the right manufacturer. I heard that this drive is a Philips Lite-on drive, which is surprising because Lite-ons are supposed to be good quality. I don’t know if I can trust the person who said this because I don’t know him/her.

this link and download siw.exe. Run it and look at Storage Devices. It will tell you the make and model.

burning at a slower speed. Try another brand of DVD. You may have a couple of faulty DVD’s. Interesting thet Nero 8 doesn’t show any drivers in Existing drivers:

          Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)
Is saying that it doesn’t like the DVD’s.

          < also try this >
The CD drivers may be corrupted. Boot to Safe Mode, and delete the drivers. Reboot the computer and let Windows reinstall the drivers.

          In reply to Try

I tried different media and it still doesn’t work. I’ve been to that microsoft website already. I went to safe mode to uninstall and the rebooted normally to let windows reinstall drivers and that didn’t seem to work. I uninstalled Nero 8 and put Nero 7 back on but this time, it shows that there is a power calibration error, which is what it showed me before I upgraded to Nero 8. Maybe I should just get a new drive? It’s sad because this drive is less than one year old ever since I bought this computer new.

replace the drive I would look at Pioneer. I have had really good service from these drives. Anyway a couple more things to check before replacing. Philips does not have a good track record from what I have seen.

          Optical Drive Cleaning

When you are cleaning a CD or DVD drive, there are two things that generally need to be cleaned – the tray and the lens. Cleaning the tray is simple – take some glass cleaner or isopropyl alcohol, apply it to a cloth, and rub the tray until it is clean. Leave it open for a moment until the tray has dried, and then you’re done. To clean the actual lens, you will have to go out and purchase a CD drive cleaning kit for tray-based CD players (they have different ones for caddy and auto feed drives – if you have one of those you will need a cleaning kit specifically for that type). Follow the directions on the box to clean the drive. Generally this involves applying some fluid to the bogus CD (which conveniently has a brush on it) and allowing the drive to spin up (making this one of the few cleaning operations that needs to be done when the computer is on).
