DVD on Dell 8100 Failing

By gwarren ·
My Dell 8100 includes a fixed 8X Internal
CD-RW/DVD Combination Drive-Factory Installed.
Total hours of use would be 50 hours and I play
DVD's on the 8100. After one year of great service
my DVD's will not open; the message" Put Disk
in Drive "D" remains on the screen, and the
noise from the DVD drive is an attempt to open,
and I can hear the spin but nothing plays. I was
thinking the laser is defunct, but have I missed
any steps ? tested Device Manager,Drivers, etc.
and they are working properly. Any ideas from the
technical Dell repair group ?

Thank you,

Greg Warren

DVD on Dell 8100 Failing

You might give a NAME Brand DVD rated laser lens cleaner a try.

If there is dirty air (smoke, fumes, etc.) near where you have your PC, it would be very easy for the laser lens to get dirty after 1 year (even if it was never used).

Beyond that, does the drive still work for CDs and recording?

If it does not work for anything, there could be a problem with the IDE driver for the motherboard.
Try downloading and installing the latest IDE / Chip-set driver for your system from Dell.

Thank you for your timely response. I recognize that the
laser is supersensitive but I did not think about downloadingIDE/Chip set. Will try that approach.

Thanks for the support,Greg Warren
