hardware:
same as for cdrom.

software:
if device not recognised by windows, use the cdrom with the software that came with the drive.
( better than using ms' drivers, as they are specific rather than generic )

you may also find step by step instructions on the dvd burners mfg website.
my 2 cents on guidelines: if it came with burner software, use that to test it. your old cd burner software may not support the drive.
on first boot after installing drive you may have to enter BIOS to change device setting for that ide channel position...follow the screen prompts.
depending on what ide devices are installed here is order of preference (IMHO) for how to place it on the channel.
1 master of 2nd ide channel
2. slave on second ide channel
3 slave on primary ide channel
check the jumpers on the drive. use CS if you have a cable labeled 'Master' 'Slave'
hook up the audio cable to your soundcard if you want to play tunes from this device... you can probably hook up your cd player also. see what connectors are available on the sound card and hunt up cable to match
don't run any programs while burning dvd's. set the burn speed to about 60% of the drives rated speed.
when i put one it, my first test is watching for power light when booting. maybe getting drawer to come out also (confirms power to drive) my second test is watch black boot screen-see BIOS reporting it found my new drive (amongst all my old drives hopefully)
