DVD+R won't recognize media

By lizzy5g ·
After I downloaded an XP update Windows has stopped recognizing recordable media. It tells me that the CD-RW or the DVD+R disc I've inserted has 0 files available. I've tried uninstalling all my burning software (Roxio Easy Media Creator), upgraded the software. Nothing works. My way around it has been copying the files I want to burn from Windows and pasting the files into then using the Roxio program directly. Does anyone know how to fix this?

This problem seems popping up every so often and it appears that there are a few causes.

1. Windows
Do registry editing. Uninstall DVD+R from Device Manager and follow Method 1 in
If you see afs2k.sys in upper limits or lower limits, remove the data type(s) and go to and download and run afsinst.exe.

2. Applications
It has been known that some startup programs are the culprits, for example, antivirus program, burner software, and others. Disable all startup programs from MSCONFIG and see if the problem got resolved. If it did, you can pinpoint the program and then either uninstall/reinstall or update the program.

3. HW
By chance, the DVD+R might have gone bad. If you could, connect it to a different computer and see if it works. Or test install a different DVD+R in your computer.

I would not recommend System Restore because you are going to do Windows update again and the problem may reappear.
You need to resolve the problem regardless the Windows Update.

Pardon my mistake.
Upper limits and lower limits should have been UpperFilters and LowerFilters, respectively.

This happened to me as well. I upgraded the firmware on my DVD drive and it solved the problem. See if your firmware version is out of date.
