DVD-R Copyright

I have three kids and and a DVD player, I buy a DVD and it gets scrached and have to keep buying more. I purchased a DVD Burner but I cant burn any of my DVD’s for backup so I don’t have to keep buying the movies all of the time. But 90% of the freaking movies I cant burn because it says it is Copyrighted, Is there a certain burner or DVD format need to be used in order to burn a disk or am I out of luck.
