DVD Rom and CD-RW

By dakota99 ·
I recently purchased a CD-RW for my Compaq Presario 5834, running Win 98. My existing DVD-ROM had a jumper setting of cable select. I tried numerous jumper settings in the new device (including cable select) and could not get my system to detect thenew device. Now neither device is recognized. What is the correct jumper setting for my setup. Is there anything else that could be causing this problem.

I forgot to mention, the new CD-RW is a TDK VeloCD rewriter.

Ther is no real reason to use cable select, assign the dvd/cd rw as a master device on its own ribbon cable and you should be fine. If you need to use it and share it with a nother device then make the other device the slave with you jumpers.

Cable select works fine for a single drive, or if you have a specific cable select IDE cable.

You may need to try a new cable to get both devices to function as master and slave.

Make sure that both master and slave are enabled in BIOS settings for the IDE channel that the drives are connected to.

Set both drive types to either auto-detect, or CD-ROM.
