DVD-Rom Drive is not detected by BIOS

By mapp84 ·
My system:
Abit KT7-A
AMD Duron 850
196 RAM
SB Live 1024
GeForce 2MX
Latest flashed BIOS drivers
13gb WD HDD
52X CD-ROM (LG)
RWD4224 CDRW

My DVD-Drive was working perfectly before (despite refusing to run in DMA mode). It is set to Primary Slave. Now, when I power up the computer, the drive light switches on for a second, then stops and the entire drive is inaccessible, I cannot eject and I cannot play CDs. The BIOS doesn't detect it, so obviously Windows (98 First Edition) doesn't either. I have tried changing the jumpers, putting it on Secondary (Master and Slave) and even using a new cable, all with the same problem. My CDRW and CD-ROM work on the same setting, so my guess is that its a drive problem.

Any self-fix I can do, or will I have to have it replaced under warranty?

Thanks in advance

I would suggest looking at the manufacturers web site for updated drivers,if nothing is available and it seems as though you have exhausted other options then look to replace the drive itself

1. Try to get the update driver ofthe dvd
2. Upgrade the bios
3. Upgrade your OS .

Well, i have the same problem also , not a dvd , but a very old cdrom , my other 52x works properly but once i change it to the old one it wont work .

What ido is i check the model of that cdrom and when searching it on the net , i found it , install it and work ever since.

The DVD drive is dead from the moment the PC boots up. As I said before, the light comes on then dies, and the entire drive is totally inaccessible from the moment the BIOS starts up. The BIOS is flashed to the latest version. Thans anyway

You can't do too much on those devices physically so you better get a replacement before the warranty expires.

When you tried putting it on the secondary master, was there any other device attached (such as a HD or CDRW)? I've run into problems having a DVD on the same bus as a U-100 HD. Also I've run into issues with a CD or DVD on the same bus as a CD-R(W).

Failing that, and of course making sure the cables and jumpers are correct, I would think about the power supply. If I read right, you have a HD, CDROM, CDRW, now the DVD (unless you are replacing the CDROM), as well as the GeForce and probably a few fans there as well. I would want to run at least a 320W P/S.

I've tried it as both seconday master and slave, all to no avail. My PSU handled my DVD-ROM, CD-ROM, CDRW and GeForce etc. without any problem before. Thanks anyway

try setting your bios to auto-detect for all four ide channels - just because your cd-rw and cd-rom drive work without the setting, it doesn't necessarily mean your DVD drive will work as well - if the bios still doesn't detect it, try the drive by itself without the other cd drives attached - it could be an incompatibility issue with the other drives only now coming to light because of the bios update.
