By nosliw247 ·
A 16x Samsung DVD-ROM plays music CD's but doesn't plays DVD. I think it needs the decoder? It's running on A Win98 system. Using an NVIdia 32MB videocard.

DVD-ROM needs decoder?

by XpertDragon In reply to DVD-ROM needs decoder?

Did you purchase your DVD drive as a stand-alone drive, with no software? There are quite a few low cost to FREE DVD viewers avialable on the internet. I am not sure, but I believe Win-DVD is Free or at least trialware.

Some older first generation DVD Drives in PCs needed a hardware coder card that took the load of playing DVD movies off of the Video card and or CPU. Most DVD drives don't need that now, and the specs of the newer machiens can easily handle high-quality digital video.First things first....get yourself DVD viewing software if you don't already have some now, and see if you get any error messages from attempting to just pop in a DVD and play it.

Best of Luck!

you are correct. DVD decoders come in two varieties hardware decoders which are often integrated with video cards. (ATI, DXR by creative, geforce by nvidia) Software decoders work well if you have a powerful system. (ie 900mhs, 256mb ram, high speed ide channel)
In many cases however the programs that run in the backgroup due to program clutter and end user installs can cripple even the fastest of systems. I recommend getting a hard ware driven decoder. But if your budget is tigh, take the software version. (power DVD, winDVD, DVDviewer) many of which are free....

Totally believe this decoder worked in collaboration with the NVidia graphics card, however, installing that driver that came with the card didn't help. thanks

Check the driver CD for your video card.

There might be DVD player software on the CD.

Alternately, you can find either Power DVD or WinDVD for under $10 at many web sites.

Thanks for your suggestions. Tried them all, but the drive just would not play the disks. Actually on one instance, it did strat playing the disk, then it froze and that was the end of it.

Other Ideas:

DMA mode in BIOS settings for the DVD drive.
Follow the drive mfgs recomendations.

IDE drivers for your motherboard.
Check the motherboard or chipset manufactures web site for the latest version.

AGP Mini-port driver:
Same as apove, make sure that you have the latest AGP driver for the motherboard.

DirectX:
I would go ahead and update to DirectX 8.1 if you do not have it already (Microsoft)

RAM
You want between 196, and 384MB of RAM on a W98 system.

Background applications:
You may need to shut down the programs with icons in the system tray.
Also, run msconfig, and disable any program that runs at startup that you do not need.

SpyWare:
You may also have some spyware on your system that is getting in the way.
Run AdAware from www.lavasoft.de to find any.

RAM: it use to work on the current sys. 128MB W98, however, the system was totally revamped, (new HDD)and software reinstalled.
Direct 8.1 and DMA mode - did those. didn't work

AGP-Miniport and motherboard IDE drivers would have been our best trial yet... unfortunately the owner needed urgent use of system. didn't get to try those.
