DVD ROM WITH A CD-RW DRIVE

By michkap1 ·
I am in the process of buying a Dell 8100 series computer and am not very familiar with the multimedia source: optical drives. What are the pros and cons of getting a DVD-ROM with a
CD-RW drive in one bay verus getting 2 bays- one with a CD-RW drive and one with a DVD-ROM?
I selected: Operating system WME
Logitech keyboard mouse
integrated 3com etherlink 10/100
56k telephony modem for windows ME-sound option
16X DVD ROM Drive for 32 MB NVIDA Geforce MX AGP Graphics caard
SB-Live value digital
AltecLansing ACS340 Speakers W/subwoofer
new MicrosoftTM Works suite2001 with money 2001 Standard
Norton Antivirus 2001
Dell Jukebox poweres byMusicmatch 6.0
Image expert 2000, Dell edition DPS- [412-210
10 feet USB Cable USBCABL-[7001-140]
For the 2nd bay-16x/10x/40x CD-RW drive 16CDRW2-[313-3305]
I have not purchased the Dell 8100 yet because I would like some expert advice concerning the above question.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND EXPERT OPINION.

DVD ROM WITH A CD-RW DRIVE

Your system sounds like a fine unit just the way it is described above. Personally, I recommend separate drives instead of a combination drive. I believe that the pros and cons outlined below support this conclusion:

CD-R/W and separate DV PRO's
1. Easy to make copies of original CD-ROMs.
2. Have a movie running in a windows while accessing the other CD drive.
3. CD-R/W less complicated, so less likely to fail.
4. Both proven reliable technologies.

CD-R/W and separate DV CON's
1. Price of two drives higher than one combo drive.
2. DVD drive may not be able to read copied CD's, so making copies of copies might have to be a slow two-step operation.

CD-R/W-DVD Combo Drive: PRO's
1. Less expensive than separate drives.
2. Ideal when you only have one free drive bay or one free IDE connection.
3. Perfect addition to a standard CD-ROM drive.
4. One combo drive will use less power if you power supply is small.

CD-R/W-DVD Combo Drive: CON's
1. More complicated device may have higher incidence of failure.
2. If this will be your only CD drive, copying CD's will always be a slow two-step procedure.
3. If a movie is running in a window, the drive is not available for a second function.

Hope this was helpful.

one of my friends bought Dell P4 4 weeks ago.
it's not really nice as you think. dell is not useing orginal intel motherboard because they are expensive. I would buy a Gateway computer instead. and you get all the same freatures less from Gateway.
i think separate cdrm and cdrw is better because then you can copy cd to cd with out copying files to hard drive.

We are resellers and consultants. We junked a lot of CD-RWs after about a year's use, until we found Plextor units. Suggest separate drives and specifiy Plextor 16x10x40 as your CD-R/RW drive. They also have a new 24x10x40 unit, but it is expensive and you will have trouble finding disks rated for 24x recording speed.
If you must buy a "branded" system, STICK WITH DELL. Gateway's are nothing but factory seconds trash!
