DVD RW and CD RW Access is Missing

By iwellman ·
I am unable to access my DVD and CD. In the Hardware manager it identifies them but flags them as having a problem. When I trouble shoot it give me error code 19 "Your registry might be corrupted" I have uninstalled both and reinstalled them. When directed to do so I rebooted. Neither drive shows up... If I uninstall and reboot, the computer says it is installing the two "Plug and Play" devices and asks me to reboot again. When I reboot they do not show up.

I have tried to disable Norton AntiVirus - no change. I haved edited the registry to remove the upperlimit and lowerlimit CD/DVD key - no change. All the cables seem intact.

Where do I go from here?

Four possibilities

1. Boot to Safe Mode and see if they work. If they do, the cause is by a startup program(s). Disable/enable half the programs at a time to find the culprit.

2. In the Registry where you find “Upperlimit” and “Lowerlimit”, do you see “afs2k.sys” data value? If you do, delete the string value and reinstall the file. Go to and download and run “afsinst.exe”.

3. Do the System Restore to a date when everything worked fine.

4. One or both of your CD-RW/DVD-RW may be bad. Connect one at a time or try on other computer to make sure they are OK.

Is this a new built system?? Are they jumpered corectly??

Try to boot with just one drive connected. (sometimes optical drives have problems running on the same IDE cable.)

Uninstall ALL CD burning software. Ensure upper and lower filters are removed from registry. Then see if drives are recognized. If so, reinstall one and only one CD burning program.

If this doesn't work, post back with OS and CD burning software (including version) that you are using.

Burning software be sure it is XP compatable. Download any patches. Remove any other burning software and clean your system. Run disk cleanup, disk defragmenter. And error checking.
If this dose not work remove all burning software and reboot. Then try adding your software. Have you insalled all updates and patches?
