DVD-RW and DVD ROM Failure

By mmartino ·
Recently my DVD-RW and DVD-ROM dirves disappeared from my computer. They were both working fine one day and the next day the computer could no linger see the drives.

Device Manager indicates Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

When I uninstall and then use the Add New Hardware Wizard to reinstall the Plug and Play devices the problem persists.

Is there anything else that i can do to recove the use of the DVD-RW and DVD-ROM drives.

Chip-Set Drivers

The driver duties for optical drives are handled by the chip-set drivers.

When you have problems with optical drives, the best thing to do is update the chip-set drivers.

You can get them from the motherboard / system manufacture, or the chip-set manufacture.

For both Intel and VIA chip-sets, you need to make sure you get the correct archive driver if you have an older system.

Sometimes, after installing new chip-set drivers, you need to remove the IDE controllers from device manager in order for Windows to update the drivers.
