No.
DVD players only - will play DVD's i.e. dvd-r or rw and dvd-ram.
99% of new and nearly new PC's CD Players will only play CD, cd-rw, VCD and Audio CD store bought audio and self created mpeg burned to regular cd r/ or cd rw disks.

No, you need a DVD-ROM drive and DVD player software to watch DVD movies on your PC.

Basically, even though DVDs and CDs look similar, the tracks on a DVD are very different, and cannot be read by the laser pickup in a CD drive.

In fact, not all home component DVD players have the firmware and software to read CD-ROMs.

A DVD disk has around 4.7 GB of data.
A CD-ROM has 700 MB of data.
The DVD has almost 7 times that data density of a CD.

Even with a DVD rom installed in your PC, you need certain codecs and drivers installed to even play DVD's. Imagine my shock when I discovered this piece of information the hard way when I first bought my DVD rom

DVD's use a multi-layer design with VERY sophisticated lasers required to read. Whereas a CD-ROM is actually very clunky and simple by today's standards.

I've never had a codec issue with a DVD-Rom, but I have seen HUNDREDS of codecs to read converted DVD's (on regular CDRW's)usually as AVI, DIVX and mpeg formats. If you have a regular CDRW wih a compressed movie on it, you will need the DIVX codec packs available at http://www.divx.com
kazzalite also has one of the best codec bundles that will play just about everything, search for 'kazaalite mega codec pack'
