DVD wont play through without error

By mizzella ·
I have had my brand new DVD ROM checked and apparantly it is fine. However, when I try to play a DVD (brand new, no scratches or dust), it will play for a while and then it will stop and will not start again without reopening the program. Sometimes a windows error will occur aswell and shut down the program. I have used powerDVD, windows media player, and a program that came with a DVD that I bought.... ALL DID THE SAME THING. It's driving me crazy! Is it just the programs I'm using or is it windows XP or what?

I would check the DVD Roms manufactures website for any diagnostic tools, or possibly updating the firmware?

Without the actual error message it is a bit hard to answer your question but I would first be looking at available system resources if they are low this could be causing your problem as at some stage of playing the DVD you exceed the System Resources and Windows is shutting down or making the application non responsive.

As above - do you have a lot of programs trying to run when you start up? Run MSCONFIG and click the Startup tab - uncheck the whole lot, reboot, then see if you can play a DVD. If you can, then you need to only enable the essential items in the list.

Also, adding more RAM will probably help too.

hey thanx, it seems to be working... I hope. Although I'm not sure which items are essential. I've never run msconfig before... certainly good to know though!
