Dvd writer burning error

Hi I have recently come across a problem with my LG multi format dvd writer, I keep getting a focal and tracking error while trying to burn a dvd i have tried using different software with the same results any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated………thanks

From the error description, it sounds like either the laser is dirty, or the drive mechanism for the laser head is not aligned properly.

First, if the drive is still under warranty, check with LG and / or the place you bought the drive from.

If it is out of warranty, you have little to loose by cleaning the laser.
Use a name brand laser cleaner that SPECIFICALLY states that it is compatible with DVD drives.

If cleaning the laser helps a little, or has no effect, replace the drive.

As a side note, this is one of the reasons that I set up my cases with positive air pressure. If all your fans blow air out of the case, your drives and other cracks in the case become dust filters.

Chas is perfectly correct in his diagnosis about the only thing I would advise you to check on is the Warranty from the Maker LG in this case as some retail outlets only give a standard warranty and forget about the manufactures warranty so if it is UG from the Maker you can then insist that the place that you brought it from send it away for repair/replacement.

I had this happen recently on a repair that I had in where the M’Board had died and because I didn’t deal with the wholesaler who sold the M’Board I had to return it to the Retailer for Replacement and they tried to get away with the 12 Month Warranty that they offer on all complete systems I had to have a small fight with them to get them to return the M’Board for the makers warranty.
