E-commerce Infrastructure Support Issue

By gallofr ·
I would like to hear from anyone out there on this particular question:

How is E-commerce infrastructure viewed from a support perspective within your organization. Is it part of the "general" IT support structure or is it a seperate entity with its own set of procedures and process and staff?

If it is a seperate entity....why?

E-commerce Infrastructure Support Issue

by kent.manley In reply to E-commerce Infrastructure ...

My present company has a hybrid model. We outsource the hosting, maintenance, and general support; content is maintained by a combination of in-house technical people, developers, functional people, and marketing consultants. The primary reason the ecommerce side is kept outside is to eliminate the costs of network and system administration, along with the increased infrastructure costs (network, power, etc.) of maintaining a 24x7 situation. Short answer: too small for that right now.

As that aspect of the business grows, these factors will be re-evaluated to determine whether it becomes cost-effective to move that in-house; at that time, we'll evaluate whether to integrate the support structure or keep a parallel model.

Hope thishelps.
Kent

E-commerce Infrastructure Support Issue

As the IT Manager at a High Tech company i can tell you how we do it. The eCommerce infrastructure is separtated into two parts. First we have the web server with the customer order and customer database (linked with an ERP system) within the IT departments arena. Second the actual payment processing infrastructure is outsourced. To many issues with having it internal. However, the IT department is still responsible for the relationship between the outsourced company and our business initatives.

Hope this answers your question
