E-mail/ web mail server

By dsklon ·
Hello,

We have a smaller office and they want me to bring all services in-house. I have FTP up and running no problem, next is apache and that doesn't seem to be hard. But I am looking at the e-mail packages and it does not seem to be as easy. I need something that does pop3, SMTP and web mail for the guys who travel. I found a product called courier and it seems to do it all, just want to know if anyone has had experiance with it, and if the exp was bad, what I can do to do all this in a month.

i suggest using QMAIL and VPOPMAIL.. its easy to use and its free... and if you are familiar with C..your in good hands...

for web mail... since you are using APACHE. might at well use HORDE IMP... its purely PHP... right now our company is usingthose software and it works perfectly....

I think the choice with Qmail is very good. This is a very good and securly mail server. All you need, as software is:

- qmail (latest version 1.03)
- ucspi-tcp (this is the transporter agent)
- vpopmail (with this you admin all of domains, users andll psswrds)
All of these you can find easy from seach in www.freshmeat.net

Aso you need some scripts to starting mail server. if you wish I could help you with this.

about web based mail - you can use all of these (already installed softwares) and some additional, as qmailadminweb. I think it's a very good choise.

with best regards,
cyrille

I think to better use of Emails in-house facility, try to use WebMail package which is free for Linux. Only you need to have Apache, ApacheJServ, JDK, JSDK packages to install the software. The WebMail package can be downloaded from the following site.

E-mail/ web mail server

Hi,

It seems to be late for my answer, but I would like to suggest two apps:
a) OCS (Obsidian Communication System) from www.obsidian.co.za. You need just the rpm-s from there, fetchmail and mswordview (for the last one, look at www.freshmeat.net). If you want security as well, you should try first to compile apache with ssl (on a Celeron 800 it took to me just half an hour to install it, after 5 hours reading docs!!). For this step, you will need apache distribution (1.3.20) and mod_ssl (you can find it at freshmeat as well).

b)Open WebMail (check for it at freshmeat). Most probably, for this one you will need mod_perl, apart from those mentioned above (for security, otherwise, out of the box, RedHat comes with perl integration into Apache).

Good luck.
