When you look at the header of the emails, do they not tell you the originating IP numbers ?

Rahil - I thoroughly sympathize with your need to identify this dispruptive nutso. Having come out of Senior Security Management I suggest:

1) This guy must know who the femailes are if he is emailing them, per se. Therefore, he is a walk-in guy.

2) Can you not Right click on his email address>> left click Properties>>General tab and also Details tab?

3) Bring your most trusted female forward who can handle such a smut and ask her infinite details. i.e. Time of day. Type of smut. Guesstimation of age. Jokes or suggestions. Good or poor grammar.

4) If the nutso emails only females, inject a male into the circle. Do this by asking a female to signal your appointed male when the geek emails her. Or, invent a female for the geek torespond to.

5) Have a trusted female or the invented female encourage the geek by a() Your funny (b) Your hot (c) I like that (d) Let's meet by the water cooler/or for coffee.

6) If the geek receives replies to his smut he will retain the replies as trophies. This is their pattern. This will aid in his identification.

If you do not have the stomach for sleuthing at the geek's gutter level you NEVER will catch him. Also, it is paramount that you let your staff know, by your investigative actions, that they have priority in your eyes.

There is a software package call Mail Essentials. This actually recieves the mail and scans it before sending it to Exchange. GFI makes it. It is inexpensive and easy to set up.

Hope this helps

I read your message again and if he is internal to your company you can check where it is coming from. Unless he is sending it from an external address, in which case, how are you certain this person is from the same company?

You sya you are running a proxy, if so is this only between you and external email or is it filtering internal email as well?

If you do not have an internal proxy, then as short term measure in order to catcvh this offender consider implementing one on you intranet. This can be totally transparent to the users with everyone having full access into and out of the proxy. The idea here is to monitor what file attachments are being sent and watch for graphic image formats (jpg, gif, bmp, mp3 for video, qif etc. Once you identify which emails are contain images you can audit those specific emails hopefully catching the ones with the smut. Also, once it is coming into the proxy full routing information should be available from the network and you should be able to trace it to a specific machine/network point.

Cheers
Marc
