With electronic paper grabbing headlines recently I wonder how long it will take hardware and software developers to realize the synergy possible with other existing and emerging technologies. Look at the following technologies taken individually:
e-paper = lightweight, flexible, low-power, color or monochrome devices capable of displaying text and graphics.
Power-Over-Ethernet(PoE) = a standard for Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) and Powered Devices (PD) that allow 48 volt power to be transmitted using existing and new twisted pair network wire.
Windows SideShow = a standard from Microsoft for devices that act as a secondary display to accesses information from your computer. You can use this type of device to read e-mail messages, or scan top news stories, and much more, without turning on your computer.
Now add the three together:
E-Paper + PoE + SideShow = a lightweight flexible display that can be placed anywhere you currently have network wiring (without needing additional wiring for electricity) that can be used to read e-mail, display calendars, news stories, and much more.
The possibilities make my head swim. Somebody tell me that these are already being made!
