Web-based GUI???

You'll have to be more specific. I'm not familiar with any web-based GUIs for GNU/Linux systems, so I'm not sure which programs are available to you. I'd try running gedit, gvim, leafpad, vim, nano, or emacs... see if any of those will work. The best way to figure it out, though, is to contact the system administrator.

probably sits in or near a gateway, you'll need to identify the appliance and the version of Linux it uses.

I've seen a couple of items like this and some are actually designed NOT to allow access to the system itself unless actually standing in the server room with the keyboard and monitor plugged in to it.
