As far as I know, you cannot edit the MBR form XP or any other version of Windows.

You need a special utility and a DOS boot to access the MBR sector on a hard drive.

What are you attempting to accomplish?

If you need to change the way that XP boots up, you want to edit the boot.ini file, not the Master Boot Record.

The MBR is a section of the hard drive that is used by the BIOS for the initialization of the drive.

Boot.ini is the file that Windows XP uses to begin the OS startup process.

Boot.ini should be in the root folder of the boot (C:) drive.
It is a system hidden file.

A good reference to boot.ini commands is posted at

If you are having problems booting with XP Pro or would like to disable certain functions at boot you can also use msconfig which can be accessed from Start > Run and type msconfig. Hope this helps...!
