edit multiple users in active directory?

By aforjeh ·
I have a domain with over 100 users, which I now wish to assign a profile path to. I need to know if I can automate the addition of

\\server\profile\%username%

to each users account, and whether this will copy the profile from their computer next time they log on /off, or start them with some kind of default profile...

edit multiple users in active directory?

You would need to create a script to automate the \\server\profile\%username change to the accounts.

the second issue, regarding copying the user profile...if the user has already logged onto a computer, and established a profile, once you make the path change for their profile in their user account, they will no longer be using the profile that is local to the computer they have been logging onto. You will need to copy the account to the \\server\profile\username folder off of the computerthey are currently using. To do this in W2K Pro, right click the mouse on My Computer, Select User Profiles, and select the profile you wish to copy. Select the path of the network share that you specified in their user profile, and change the permission of the profile to be accessible by the user if it isn't already established. For future hires, create a user profile that you want each new user to have when they first logon and copy that profile to a folder in the profile share. When you hire someone new, create a folder with the appropriate username, and copy the default profile's folder contents to the new user's folder. Specify the correct path in the user's profile, and they will be off and running. One key issue is that if thedefault profile is rather large, the first initial logon might take some time since the entire profile has to be copied to whatever computer the new user will be at. Once this initial download is made, the local computer will cache a copy for future use, and only download differences made in the saved user profile located on the server share.

Anyway, this was terribly long winded, but feel free to bombard me with any questions.

Hope this helps.

Mike

Great... all makes sense, but i'm not sure how to set the script up - I've never had to do this.
