Eliminate Excess DNS Servers

By toreador ·
Does anyone out there know a way of collecting all of the DNS server information across multiple domains and importing it into a visio type drawing? I have been tasked with revamping a company's DNS that has no documentation and I have found 12 DNSservers so far with about 300 computers total, slight overkill.

nope. There currently is no intergration of visio and AD. But I do agree with you on the overkill. 2 is enough for 300 computers. unless you had 10000 users constantly surfing different sites, you don't need more than 2.

I have done this before. What I did is to ensure that the DNS server are configured to save the zone data to a file (myzone.dns or something like this. Collect a copy of every zone file and concantanate them in a text editor (like notepad). Clean-up the duplicates and correct the SOA and NS records to reflect the correct server for each of the zones.
This text file can now be used as a database for your documentation.
Remember that efficient configuration of DNS is imperative for proper ADfunctionality. Also remember that DNS does not have to have a server for each domain, but a zone will need to exist for each domain. Multiple zones can exist on a DNS server. I usually configure only 2 at the main site, and one at each remote site(to keep query traffic low). Rember to also update DHCP with the new DNS configurations (if you use DHCP, as I will alway do for client workstations).
Hope this helps.

Not as simple as a visio program but acceptable. Thanks!
