Emachines computer wont boot up with the hard drive in.

By jbbauer44 ·
Quick question for hardware guys. My mom has an Emachines computer, and it kept freezing on bootup right when it says enter setup or boot options. If I disconnect the hard drive it boots up no problem and it runs a live cd no problem. Put the hard drive back in, freezes still. Stuck the hard drive in my computer and it hung up for a few minutes on "detecting sata slave ide drive". Windows eventually booted up but there was no hard drive listed in device manager or windows explorer. I have dealt with pcs with bad hard drive but have never experienced one actually making the machine hangup and not even be able to enter setup. I have come to the conslusion the hard drive needs to be replaced, am I correct?

Yeah, bad drive. Be kind to it, don't use it, and maybe you'll be able to get data off of it. The reason it's hanging the system is due to failing drive electronics rather than bad platters or heads.

You might be able to:
a) Double ziplock bag it and put it in a cold freezer for a couple of days then hook it up and attempt to copy the user files off of it if there is anything important involved (have a drive with space on it ready, of course).
b) You or someone with the skills could try swapping the drive electronics for a known-good controller of the exact same model and revision. (The closer the serial number, the better.)

Hard drive disrupting data lines

by mjd420nova In reply to Emachines computer wont b ...

Many times when a hard drive fails, it fails in such a manner that the data lines common to it and any other drives get their data corrupted or blocked from getting to the drive interface on the motherboard. Freezing might work but in most cases it's gone for good.

I feel your pain. Because of issues like this, I refuse to work on computers that have AOL installed. I won't clean up after AOl or eMachines or Norton Utilities and other such rubbish.
