Email and Internet Monitoring

By jseok ·
Hello,
I am looking for some type of software that monitors and tracks employee internet usage. I realize that there are several out there, but I wanted to ask my fellow Techrepublicans what they recommend. Only one problem, our company has been having most of their internet misusage occur at remote offices. I need to find a program that will track all of their usage from my central location. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Email and Internet Monitoring

I think the issue isn't where your users reside but where there access to the net comes from - if its just one location, then monitoring is a snap.

We use software from Elron to block sites and track usage. We have many remote locations but onlyone Internet access point(modems are banned on desktops, so the Elron server is in the same location.

We've been using it for a couple of years, and it has worked fairly well for a large organization of 3500 employees. We have set up an automaticsystem to generate emails to employees, their supervisors and HR for repeat offenders.

We too have had most of our problem users in remote locations.

Hope that helps.

James

You should allow all employees to surf the internet whenever they want to. That should solve your problem.

How do those people in the remote offices access the internet? If it is from a single source, then it would be easy. You can use Microsoft ISA or try other third party software. Any proxy software would be sufficient. Those like winproxy, wingate and my highly recommended winroute pro would do the trick.

My company is using winroute pro. This piece of software is remarkable. Really worth the unlimited license that we are paying. It also have simple email server capability which does not havemonitoring. But actually save bundles from buying that expensive Exchange server!!!

As for internet filtering, it have all the features you ever want like port filtering, ip filtering, URL filtering and so on. I am also looking forward to the next release end of this year which will have QoS feature!!! Darn cool for a 1mb+ software. Oh, it also have some firewall capabilities!!

Hi, Assuming your remote users are mobile & use dialup conections, then you cant do much except call up the ISP & ask him how many hrs are left.
If your remote are creating problems sitting in a single office, they are probably using MS Proxy Server or Router NAT, in both you can enable daily login & install URL Blocking Firewalls to block xxx, sex, porn, joke, news, employment sites.
We use MS Proxy 2.0 with X Stop (www.xstop.com) as our URL blocker. We have also granted HTTP, HTTPS, POP3 & SMTP protocol access to users ONLY.
FTP, REAL, AOL etc is not given to users.
all the best, in case you need more info, do email me at akashdeep_b@yahoo.com

Try Web Sense Enterprise from http://www.WebSense.com Its really great Internet monitoring & filtering software.

Features include:
1- Integration with all major Proxy softwares eg MS Proxy, ISA etc...

2- Restrict users based on their login name, IP address etc.

3- Allow time limit eg 2 hour access to evey one.

4- Restirct particular categories of sites. eg I've used it for our testing team. They need to access just one site & nothing else.

5- Manage from different pcs.
6- Reporting tools.......
