I’ve recently been through a hellish experience. I had to send email with attachments, some Excel files, some Word files, some .gif files, to a large number of people using a wide variety of ISPs. Those that went to businesses generally were received with no problem, but many went to home computers using all kinds of local ISPs. Unless I violated various size limitations imposed by some of those ISPs, I did not get failed mail, but I did get LOTS of return emails from the recipients saying they didn’t get the attachments at all, or the attachments were not in the format I sent. Many were converted to Winmail.dat files that the recipients were unable to open or do anything with. In other cases, they got the attachment, but much of it waslost. Can anyone tell me what’s going on here? I’m inclined to think its not my computer, but something having to do with going from one ISP to another before reaching the intended addressees. I have a brand new computer using Windows 2000 with Office 2000 Professional. Understanding that some of my addressees might not be that up-to-date, I saved the documents in an older version to provide wider compatibility It didn’t seem to matter. It turned a simple job into a time-consuming, frustrating experience! I would have been better off sending them snail mail. I sure would appreciate someone explaining to me what is happening so I could do something different the next time.
