email being blocked

By crofta ·
I am the secretary for our school group. Just today I received this message in my Thunderbird inbox:
Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 550 Mail rejected by Windows Live Hotmail for policy reasons. A block has been placed against your IP address because we have received complaints concerning mail coming from that IP address. I have about 50 people in this group that I communicate with regularly. I cannot even send to one person individually.
Any suggestions?

it sounds like you have could have a couple of security issues as the underlying cause.

However, I think that you should address those later.

in order to send email from your current email address you may be restricted by either 1) your mail server's ip address or 2) the school's ip address.

If it's the mail server then you need to contact the administrator. If it's school you need to call the administrator.

S/he will have to fight with the anti-spam police on your behalf in order to make this work in the long term.

There are easy answers but it seems that your school really has there hands full.

I suggest you call the tech support people asap.

If you don't have tech support people or because you are sending from a home email and not the school then you could always just get a free email account from yahoo or gmail and import your list or just add the new account to your current appplication and set it as the default.

Did you contact Hotmail support???

Since this is on a public server, it is likely that someone was sending SPAM from it. Then the SPAM filtering SW added the servers IP address to a list of known problem IPS and blocked it.

Either that or Hotmail blocked your individual address from mail abuse of some sort. If I were you, I would contact Hotmail support first. It is often up to the ISP to have their IP adress unblocked from SPAM filters.

For the long term, may I suggest using an email address from an unshared (dedicated) email server (such as a work email address). If it is not on a public server, it is much less likely to be blocked in the future.

blocked email

by crofta In reply to Question?

I contacted my ISP, cox, who told me my IP address according to their records was fine and they would not change it or reset it. My colleague told me that a spammer probably used the IP address at some point. Both your suggestions I almost did however during the week I had a power outage at my house and that reset the router located in the attic. I have not had the problem since. Thank you for your replies.

Typical school with no security controls..

I bet you have an open relay or one or more of your users is hacked with a spam-bot. As in most cases, schools spend less on security and more on Apple/Mac computers. The only way around your current problem is to clean up your SPAM act, and then send Hotmail a note to have them take you off their blacklist.
