Email issues when switching from wired

By cfrank01 ·
Hopefully someone can give me some advice. My wife configured a friend's email client for her on the friend's laptop when it was connected to our wired network. However, when the user took her laptop back home to her wireless network, she is unable to receive email until she has reset her cable modem. Now she has to do this everytime she turns her laptop on and connects to her wireless network. If we bring the laptop to our wired network, we can send/receive email with no problems. We also recently put on XP Service Pack 2. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Is the user able to connect to the Internet from home?

Sounds to me like the user is taking her office IP address home with her. Is her office assigning IP addresses by DHCP? Or is it hard coded?

The wired network I am referring to is at my home and I do have DHCP enabled.
After we had the user reset her cable modem the first time, she was able to receive email. However, if she turns her laptop off and then back on, she has to reset her cable modem again in order to receive new email. She can send email just fine without having to reset the modem.

How is she setup to receive her IP address (like the user above asked) is the first thing to look at. Check for any static IP settings (gateway, dns, etc...) this really shouldn't affect this but it could be causing some system issues.

Next up, can she surf prior to this? Or does this issue just affect her email? What is she using for her email client?

What this could be, is a result of Outlook kicking itself offline because it is not finding what it expects (wireless network exceeding the mail clients timeout) and her rebooting the cable modem is just reactiviting the link on her system, bringing the client back to life.
