email server from scratch

By nett ·
I work for a school district. I need to set up an email server to service about 500 users. Any ideas for Operating systems, clients, or tips?
How is Exchange? Echange 2000 versus Exchange 5.5?
thanks a bunch.

Depends on the budget and the needs

by ejtucker In reply to email server from scratch

The two questions you need to ask are:
1) What are the messaging requirements?
2) What is the budget?

Exchange 2000 is an amazing product but it's pricey relative to pop3/smtp only combos as it does a lot more. Also you need to consider the Active Directory installation as the grounding.

If you don't need the features of Exchange 2K (which is what you'll be getting now). Decide on your OS platform (generally a Windows/Linux toss up these days) then there are many mail packages that can fit on top of either.

Bynari is a decent linux mail server. Search on "mail server" and Windows for a list of windows based ones.

Exchange 2000 is way better assuming...

by PitSnake In reply to email server from scratch

Exchange 2K is much more robust but it will only run on Windows 2000 Server OS's, but if your running an AD network the administrative integration of the OS and Exchange are outstanding. If you choose to go with *nix solution there are a bunch of mail programs that could fit your needs. Sendmail..etc..

thanks for your thoughts. we are currenly running AD. we are totally redoing our network. we are going totally Win2k, from file servers to proxy servers. It only makes sense to make the email server Win2k also.
we are thinking of internal messaging only. we have a contracted server which hosts email for the outside. any suggestions about doing both while keeping the separate? (like internal username "first.last" and external username "lastfi")
