Emails disappeared in Outlook Express 6 compaction

By GlennRH ·
Hi there,

In my Outlook Express 6(running XP), I was prompted to have the program compact my messages to free up disk space. While that was running, my system suddently restarted. After the restart, the compaction process was no longer running and dozens of important emails vanished from my archival folders within Outlook Express.

We found the messages in the Recycle Bin and clicked on Restore. After searching for the files, we found .bak files and .dbx files located in:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\<long number>\Microsoft\Outlook Express

We can't seem to open or recover these messages in this state. Please, any help would be very much appreciated; these files are very important!

when you say "We can't seem to open or recover these messages in this state." Are you getting any error like file in use by another program? If so i would boot into safe mode then copy the files

Well, the first obvious thing to ask is if these mail files are so important, WHY do you not have a recent backup?

Now that you have had a problem, you see the value of backing up your files. Determine a back up plan and stick to it.

As to recovering mail from the files in the recycle bin, here is what you should / should have done:

Move the backup files to an easy to find folder such as C:/oldmail.
For the files that are now labeled .bak, change the extension to .dbx

Open Outlook Express.

Click on File, Import, Messages

Select Outlook Express 6, then select import mail from an OE6 store directory.

Browse to the folder and select the files to recover messages from.
