That is absolutely ridiculous.

Not here

My company just fired someone for surfing the internet too much, none of it was porn. I was ask to print reports on his internet activity (thank you WebMarshal) and he was surfing the internet constantly throughout the day (I don't think shrekthemovie.com is business related).

I have a strong policy in place that states what they can and can't do on company computers, this includes the internet.

If you have a good monitoring program in place there is no way they can surf for porn on the internet, it gets blocked and they are stuck reading a message on what they did was wrong and why it is wrong. Once a week ALL users must agree to the internet use policy before surfing the internet (a screen pops up and they must agree to the policy before going on the internet.

Wrong...

by TomSal In reply to Not here

Your ethics are just and sound...but your logic that if you have a good monitoring program in place there is no way they can surf for porn on the internet is flawed...heavily.

No program can detect and stop everything...its impossible. If it never failed you yet -- you may be lucky and have well-behaved employees...or just no one used a site yet that the program doesn't block.

No kidding

I know that not all porn sites get blocked, but they do get reported. So even if they are lucky enough to get on a porn site, they are still screwed because it gets tracked and they know it.

I am no so naive to think that the software is infallible.

This is in a word : Stupid.

by TomSal In reply to Employees can?t be fired ...

Insane. Stupid. Unbelievable. Moronic. Just a few words to describe this situation.

Rest assured YOU CAN GET FIRED FOR SURFING PORN!

Just because some crazy judge (who is probably a porn-o-holic himself...lol) deemed it unjust in Norway, doesn't mean its right or even legal in the USA.

We have fired people for this issue btw, so I can assure you this information I tell you is accurate in the US.

Firing Employees......

by brentc76 In reply to This is in a word : Stupi ...

We to have fired several employees (Indiana, US) for looking at porn. anywere from Cartoon porn to animal porn. A buncha sickos... And the IT manager and myself have had to look at all of this... in the past 9 months we have fired about 15 people for porn surfing. We now have a good program in place to prevent a lot of this (Websence). but like the other guy mentioned, not everything will be blocked, but it will be reported, and then hopefully someone will block that site.

The key is that they are "field employees"

by DC_GUY In reply to Employees can?t be fired ...

Employees in the field are on duty 24/7 because they've been taken out of their homes by their company. They must be allowed to have some recreation, and using the company computer that's already there is about as cheap as it gets. I wonder how many complaints this would have generated if they'd been visiting Bible websites.

If the guys had tried to do something more uplifting like driving into town to see a concert, I doubt that the company would have paid for it. I once worked for a company that wouldn't pay for lunch on the road, on the theory that I would have had to eat lunch if I'd stayed home. Well duh, I would have packed a brown bag for fifty cents and had a really good lunch, instead of a plate full of trans-fatty acids for five bucks in a cafeteria.

Either way...

by firefly1522 In reply to Employees can?t be fired ...

If the company has a policy that says that you can or can not or will or will not do something and you sign that you agree or be terminated, end of story.

If the company did not have this type of policy or it was just "understood" that it wasn't allowed, then I could see how legally the employees could get away with something like that. And that would just make the company stupid for not setting up rules.

Seen it in the USA

by sadhbh In reply to Employees can?t be fired ...

I once caught a high ranking Lawyer in a firm with tons of porn, some very graphic stuff. He even had some in a folder on the server. He claimed he had an addition. Agreed to go therapy and they let him keep his job
They even asked me to back up his files to CD so; he could install them on his home PC.
Needless, to say I don't work there any longer.
