Empty 'Network Neighborhood' on Win98.

By johnm ·
I have 1-Win98_2nd. Edition running TCP/IP. Doesn?t see anyone in ?Network Neighborhood? . I can PING other machines. I can MAP network drives to any available ?SHARE? on the network. But I can't see anyone.

The problem started after I changed the name of the Domain on the PDC. Once I changed all the client machines to the proper settings, all NT & Win98 boxes worked great.
Then I changed the Domain back to its? previous name. This time, after changing the client settings back, the NT boxes worked, the Win98 box doesn?t.

If all the settings are changed (NT domain and workgroup) then you may have to remove Client for MS Networks and TCP/IP, reboot, and reinstall.

I've already removed everything from within the Network Settings and re-installed all Adapters, Protocols (TCP/IP only), and Services..

I've already removed everything from within the Network Settings, and then reinstalled.
I have even tried a different NIC.

John, if you can ping the box, try this: START> FIND> COMPUTER> Enter the name of the boxes on the network you want to see. It should find it. Do this a few times, reboot and all should be well.
Happens to me also whenever I change the network around. I just look for the machine names like above and I never look back.
Take care and good luck.

Good Try!! I was able to use 'Find, Computer' to find the other machines on the network. I created 'short-cuts' to each of the machines(Computer Name)found during 'Find, Computer'. But I still can't browse 'Network Neighborhood', nor can I use 'right-click''explore', I get a 'Unable to Browse the Network' error..

When you changed things around and were asked for the Win98 CD did you use the CD or hard drive CAB files? Use the CD and make certain you are using the proper version i.e. Second Edition if applicable. Also, provide the adapter info manually i.e. 10 half duplex or 100 half duplex, this will jump start sometimes.

Thanks for the input Grant!!.

I checked the Dates of the file in my /Win98 install directory against the files on the CD. The dates all matched.

But when I highlighted all the files, the file count matched, but the total selected size didn't.

I erased my Win98 install directory from my HD, then re-copied the /Win98 off my CD(I like my install files handy). Then when I install the NIC, Protocol& Services again, it worked!! I'm able to see everyone on the network!!

Thank you for your help Grant!!!

Thanks to all who gave me some feed back. It all helped.! ... :}
